City Attorney honored for more than two decades of service

January 02,2024

City of Enterprise Attorney Rainer Cotter Tuesday night was recognized by Mayor William E. Cooper and members of the City Council.

Cotter diligently served the city and citizens of Enterprise for 23 years. He will be leaving the City Attorney position to assist in his family’s business.

“He told me this has been a difficult decision, but he informed both the Council and me that he feels like he needs to help in this way, and we understand his decision,” Mayor Cooper said.

Cotter, visibly emotional, thanked city employees, past and present.

“It is really true that the city’s employees are the heart of the city,” Cotter said. “They aren’t bureaucrats; they are public servants who care about what they do and the public they serve. They approach their jobs every day in a practical, helpful way.”

He also specifically thanked the department heads and employees for their patience and kindness over the years.  During his 23 years, Cotter worked as City Attorney under Mayor Tim Alford, Mayor Kenneth Boswell and, most recently, Mayor Cooper.

Cooper said that Cotter has agreed to assist with the transition and complete legal work on a few ongoing projects and will remain as a legal consultant for the City of Enterprise.

City Prosecutor Ashley Marshall will take on the City Attorney duties.

“She has experience in representing municipalities and I know she will be a good addition to our team,” Mayor Cooper said.
